CAMPAIGNS

LABRATS continue to campaign for full recognition of the UK Nuclear Veterans, their commonwealth counterparts and everyone affected by the UK's Nuclear Testing. We have undertaken many campaigns, working closely with other organisations and supported other campaigns. We are not a political campaigning organisation and we are not affiliated to any UK political party.  Below are a list of the campaigns that we have been involved with.

labRats health survey

In 2020 LABRATS conducted a health survey with the survivor community. A full health report was produced which has been used to understand the issues faced by veterans and descendants.

LABRATS and the Daily Mirror joined forces to campaign for a medal for the Nuclear Test Veterans. In November 2022, Rishi Sunak awarded the medal at a ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum.

70th anniversary of operation hurricane

The 3rd of October 2022 was the 70th Anniversary of Operation Hurricane. A commemorative video has been created by Brian Cowden of Crossroads 2020.

LABRATS are an ICAN partner and campaigns for the abolishment of Nuclear Weapons through the partnership. How Far from Ground Zero was produced for the ICAN Nuclear Ban Forum in Vienna.

nuclear remembrance

Organisations gather in the USA to mark the anniversary of the first US test in the Marshall Islands. LABRATS participated in the remembrance day forums.

HIROSHIMA & nAGASAKI

On the 75th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki, a special anniversary film and leaflet were produced to mark the occasion.

dominic challenge

2022 was the 60th anniversary of Operation Dominic, a joint US/UK operation on Christmas Island in 1962. Eric Barton was present at the tests, as well as Alan Owen's father 'Jessie', who witnessed 24 detonations in 78 days. Members of the community undertook the Dominic Challenge to raise funds.

nuked blood scandal

On September 21st 2023 at the All-Tests Reunion, the Nuclear Veteran Community launched a legal challenge to the Ministry of Defence to provide their full medical records with the Daily Mirror.
