NEW EVIDENCE WHICH PROVES THE SERVICEMEN WERE PART OF AN EXPERIMENT
For many years, the Ministry of Defence has denied that they used the Nuclear Testing program to experiment on the servicemen. Claiming that the testing program was for the weaponry and machinery, not for the men. This document from 1953 was uncovered in the 1980s:
It clearly states that the "Army must discover the detailed effects of various types of explosion on equipment, stores and men with and without various types of protection."
The MOD's official response is that they used dummies for this experimentation. Various debates have been held in Parliament regarding this issue. In 1998, Mr. Llew Smith
(Blaenau Gwent) raised the issue:
NEW EVIDENCE
Following extensive research, new evidence has been uncovered that proves that the UK government is not telling us the truth. Uncovered last week, this latest document lists the Data required for Military planning in 1953.
Amongst the data required, there are two items which stand out:
These troops were part of an experiment, they wanted to test the beta burn hazard from direct fall-out on troops from fission products. They wanted to know if the flash of an atomic explosion would blind troops and how quickly they could recover for combat.
They could not use dummies for this experimentation. What is even more worrying is this statement:
So troops at Operation Totem were being exposed and experimented on because there was no data available from the Operation Hurricane test.
This List 'C' was reviewed by the AERE and signed off by W.G. Marley.
William (W.) Gregory Marley was a British physicist and photography expert, who was part of the British Mission to Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project. Marley also headed a section at Los Alamos. It was Marley who added the notes regarding the UK data available.
These new documents are only two months after the Report by the Defence Research Policy Committee.
CONCLUSION
For decades the Nuclear Test Veterans have always stated that they were used in experiments, as 'Guinea Pigs', 'Lab Rats' by the Ministry of Defence to determine the effects of these devastating atomic weapons. How fast could the troops recover? would they survive? what would be the extent of their injuries?
Do these documents show the true extent of the experimentation that was carried out, that the men were used for data gathering purposes? Expendable items that could be studied so that the UK Government could understand the effects and how they could defend themselves in the event of a nuclear attack.
The two categories which involve troops are damning evidence that they were used and that they were experimented on. The cover-up and lies have continued until 2025, these men and their families deserve an apology and compensation. They deserve the truth.
A copy of this has been sent to the Veterans Minister Al Carns for comment. This response was received:
"As you will know, the priority focus remains on the records exercise, so that will take precedent over responding to standalone documentation, but I want to reassure you that all is supporting this really important work."
