LABRATS at the United Nations

The third meeting of State Parties (3MSP) of The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) will take place on the 3rd and 7th of March 2025 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The meeting is co-chaired by Kazakhstan with Ambassador Akan Rakhmetullin serving as president and Ambassador Tito of Kiribati acting as co-Chair.

LABRATS will be sending two representatives to the meeting after receiving a partial grant from ICAN to attend. This is an exciting opportunity for LABRATS to network with other impacted communities and to ensure that the voice of the UK is heard. We will be representing the communities impacted by British Nuclear Testing and spreading awareness of LABRATS and British Nuclear testing to everyone who attends.

Representatives from impacted communities across the world will be present at the event with many events and meetings planned throughout the week. A full breakdown of the events can be found here : (https://www.icanw.org/nuclearbanweek_2025)

The UK Government have refused to send an observer to this meeting and has no plans to sign the Treaty of the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

In conjunction with ICGMLT and iGLOW.world, LABRATS will be speaking at a side event on Monday, March 3rd at 1:15 pm in Conference Room A at the UNHQ. The event is titled "Toward Investigating and Redressing Lifelong and Intergenerational Impacts of Nuclear Bombing, Radiation Exposure and Fallout." and will address through testimony and scientific analysis the legacy of Nuclear testing. We will be recording the event and will publish it on social media.

Speakers for the event include:

Dr Yael Danieli - Traumatologist, victimologist and psychohistorian; Founder, Executive Director, Senior Representative to the United Nations, International Center for MultiGenerational Legacies of Trauma (ICMGLT); Director, Group Project for Holocaust Survivors and their Children.

John M. Mills - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to the United Nations

Kathleen Burkinshaw - Daughter of Hibakusha

Sara Miyako Burkinshaw - Granddaughter of Hibakusha

Keith Kiefer - Enewetak Atoll Radiological Cleanup 1977 to 1980 Veteran/survivor; Commander, (United States) National Association of Atomic Veterans (NAAV)

Kathy Sinai - Daughter of a 17-year old United States Navy Operation Hardtack 1958 USS Renville; Founder, iGLOW.

Alan Owen - Son of James Ronald Owen, HM Royal Navy. Operation Dominic 1962. Founder of LABRATS, Co-Founder of iGLOW.

Oksana Yakusho - Child survivor of Chernobyl (26 April, 1986)

The members of the panel have some incredible testimonies, which are extremely powerful to listen to.

The Danieli inventory will be discussed, with the promotion of the Radiation Exposed version of the study and our DNA Study which continues to attract new subscribers, building an incredible resource.

These projects can both be found at the iglow.world website.

This is an opportunity for LABRATS to be heard at the United Nations, on an international stage which will provide us with the platform to ensure the world never forgets about the testing program and the legacy of UK Nuclear Testing.

The LABRATS Directors would like to thank ICAN for their grant which has enabled our participation.

The UK Government should be ashamed that they are not sending any representatives to this important meeting. When we meet the Veteran's Minister in March, we will point out this mistake to him.

For obvious reasons, there will be no blog w/c the 3rd of March, but keep monitoring our social media pages for updates from the event.

Thank you for your continued support.
